During his stay in Palmyra, Cassas made numerous drawings of the monumental ruins (see Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827), draftsman, traveler, exhib. cat., Köln, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Tours, musée des Beaux-Arts, 1994-1995, no. 88, ill. for another view of Palmyra similar to the present one). The view depicts the vast field of ruins which struck all travelers arriving on the site: drums of columns, elements of entablature, capitals, evoking the chaos, destruction and precariousness of the ancient architecture.
