Lot Essay

The brand on this fauteuil indicates that it was made for Louis Jean-Marie de Bourbon, Duc de Penthièvre (1725-1793), grandson of Louis XIV. His father was the comte de Toulouse, son of the King by his mistress Madame de Montespan and a legitimized prince du sang. The duke’s inheritance was one of the largest in France and included numerous lands and residences, several ducal and princely titles and the posts Grand Amiral de France, Grand Veneur de France (Grand Huntsman of France) and Governor of Brittany. The anchor forming the duke’s inventory mark seen on the present lot derives from his title of Grand Admiral.
