Lot Essay

The asymmetrical frames are designed in the late George II 'picturesque' manner. With their flower-festooned rustic pillars supporting figurative trophies of rural pursuits evoking Diana, goddess of the chase, they relate to the designs published in Thomas Johnson's Twelve Gerandoles, 1755.
