Ancient Wonders: Antiquities and Natural History

Closing: 14 days

17 JUN 3PM – 1 JUL 3PM BST

Sale Overview

Christie’s is proud to present Ancient Wonders: Antiquities and Natural History for the first time this Classic Week. Works from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near East are offered alongside dinosaurs, fossils and meteorites, spanning four millennia of human achievement and 2.5 billion years of Earth’s history.

This sale juxtaposes creations from deep geological time with the craftsmanship of humankind, appealing to the scholar, scientist and aesthete alike.

Highlights from the Mediterranean world include a majestic Egyptian limestone lion‑head sculptor’s model from the Late to early Ptolemaic periods (c.380–300 BC), a resplendent Greek bronze helmet of Attic‑Boeotian type from the Late Hellenistic period (c.2nd–1st century BC), and an elegant selection of ancient jewellery. The Natural History section is led by a remarkable Triceratops skull — from one of the most famous dinosaur species, and among the most recognisable skulls of any animal, living or extinct.

Together, these works — whether shaped by human hands or by immense forces of nature — offer collectors a unique opportunity to engage with the origins of artistic expression and the enduring human impulse to admire the wonders of the ancient world.

All works will be on view at Christie’s King Street from 26 June to 1 July as part of the Classic Week series of sales and exhibitions.
