Lot Essay

Warhol's interest in the power of celebrity in America revolved around his childhood adulation of Hollywood, and the numerous film magazines that he read growing up that tracked the secret lives of the stars he admired. He remained fascinated with the subject of truth and reality in Hollywood throughout his life and made numerous references in the Andy Warhol Diaries about the latest gossip coming from the tabloids. This photograph served as a study created for Sidewalk, a print that was published for the portfolio Eight by Eight to Celebrate the Contemporary; created to raise funds for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
