Lot Essay
Warhol began working with the blotted line while a student at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). The artist utilized this technique to create a variety of illustrations along a similar theme by using line drawings created on a piece of non-absorbent paper. The drawings were then hinged to a second sheet of absorbent paper with tape and then inked over with a fountain pen. Warhol would then transfer the ink onto the second sheet by folding along the hinge and lightly pressing or “blotting” the two papers together. This technique created a characteristic style that Warhol became known for and the works were often finished with a touch of watercolor.
