The anime Heidi, Girl of the Alps was based on the novel by Swiss author Johanna Spyri (1827–1901). The series was brought to life by some of the finest animators of the time. Takahata Isao (1935–2018) served as director, while Miyazaki Hayao was responsible for scene design and layout. Both Takahata and Miyazaki would later become founding members of Studio Ghibli, established in 1985.
Heidi was broadcast in Japan from January to December 1974 and soon gained international recognition. It was translated into more than 20 languages and broadcast across Europe and in many other countries around the world.
