“Book” refers to a background artwork or foreground background element placed in front of the characters during anime production. Traditionally painted as a separate layer, it could be positioned between the camera and the character cels to create depth, framing, or other visual effects. In traditional cel animation, these elements were often created as painted cutouts or “kakiwari” (書き割り) and photographed together with the other layers of the scene.
