Lot Essay

The animation draft drawings were typically created by lead animators at the studio, representing a crucial stage in the animation production process. These drawings presented in this lot capture one of the film’s most memorable moments: Satsuki’s first encounter with Totoro, whom she has previously only heard about from her younger sister, Mei. Although the scene focuses on subtle details, particularly Satsuki’s eye movements and facial expressions as she notices Totoro and offers him her umbrella, it beautifully brings the world of the film to life.
One of the draft drawings here, featuring a timing adjustment note, captures the excitement and wonder in Satsuki’s eyes. Although none of the drawings bears a signature, the detailed timing instructions and expressive brushwork suggest the possibility that this particular drawing was executed by Miyazaki Hayao himself.
