Beneath a glowing moon, a towering forest spirit and two young sisters perch upon a branch above drifting cloud. This poster for My Neighbor Totoro marks the emergence of a figure that would soon become an instantly recognizable icon worldwide.
Through luminous color and gentle warmth, the image distills childhood wonder and harmony with nature in Miyazaki Hayao’s 1988 film. The director had earlier explored humanity’s bond with the natural world in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Lots 21 and 36).
Japanese art has long drawn inspiration from animals, a tradition echoed in Totoro’s hybrid form. His wide watchful eyes recall the owl, a nocturnal creature active at night like Totoro himself (Lot 6), while whiskers evoke the enduring presence of cats in Japanese visual culture (Lot 30). The creature’s calm frontality also recalls the simplified guardians of ancient Haniwa clay figures (Lot 34) and the rustic carved forms of the monk Enkū (Lot 5).
Totoro soon became the defining emblem of Miyazaki’s global reputation. Filmmakers at Pixar, including John Lasseter, have acknowledged his influence on Western animation and cinema. The character now appears widely across contemporary culture, from collaborations with luxury fashion house Loewe to everyday apparel by Uniqlo. International exhibitions, including the Hayao Miyazaki retrospective at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in 2021, further affirm this global impact.
Originally printed for theatrical display, posters such as this preserve the moment a gentle forest spirit stepped from imagination into modern visual culture.
