Lot Essay

A quiet gathering unfolds beneath dim interior light. At the center stands the veiled elder Obaba, surrounded by anxious villagers. The moment carries the weight of prophecy, as if the fragile community listens for echoes of an older world.
This animation cel comes from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, produced by Topcraft. Hand painted cels formed the fundamental units of pre-digital animation, each sheet capturing a single frame of motion while preserving the craft normally concealed within cinematic flow.
Within the narrative Obaba appears as prophetic elder and guardian of communal memory. Her voice recalls shrine oracles and storytelling traditions preserved in the Heian period literary classic Konjaku Monogatari-shu (Tales of Times Now Past), a narrative world also visualized in medieval picture scrolls such as Legends of Mount Shigi.
Created in postwar Japan, the film reflects technological anxiety while imagining ecological renewal. Its imagery recalls the dramatic scale of Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Lot 23). The ecological myth later deepens in Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke and continues to resonate across global animation from Attack on Titan to Frozen II, where vast landscapes and elemental forces shape human destiny. Across cultures and decades, forests and mountains endure, and the old prophecies still find their voice.
