Lot Essay

The design for the present lot is attributed to one of the most influential furniture designers of the 19th century, Bruce J. Talbert. In 1866, Talbert was hired by Holland & Sons, and won a silver medal with the firm at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. Talbert went on to create designs for firms like Gillows and Cox & Sons. The design of the scrolling pediment, arched panel surmount and circular ‘dot’ motif can all be seen in the drawing by Talbert for a Cabinet as reproduced in his first book Gothic Forms Applied to Furniture, Metal Work, and Decoration for Domestic Purposes, 1873, pl. 4. A deviation of that cabinet is now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. A near identical mirror, with a less elaborate lower rail below the mirror as is found in the current lot, was sold recently in the UK and is now in a Private U.S. Collection with provenance noted as being commissioned by Richard N. Thornton for Knowle Cottage, Sidmouth, Devon, in 1867.
