FINE BINDINGS – Group of three titles. England, early 20th century.
1. CHIVERS, Cedric (1854-1929), binder. Poetical Works of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. London: Macmillan and Co., 1907. Octavo. Painted vellum binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath, full light green vellum, the front cover depicting King Arthur with Excalibur, the lower cover with Queen Guinevere in a bower of roses, gilt rules, flowers gilt, top edge gilt.
2. ROSSETTI, D.G. The Poems. London: Ellis & Elvey, 1904. Two volumes, small quarto. Illustrated after Rossetti's paintings. Green half morocco and marbled boards (spines sunned to brown). Provenance: Christie's, 11 September 1998, lot 128.
3. RIVIERE & SON, binders. WHITE, Gilbert. The Natural Histories of Selborne. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1898. 12mo. Tinted calf binding by Riviere & Son, full pictorial calf, incised and tinted in colors; the front cover depicting a blue bird amidst branches and berries, the spine a wasp, and the lower cover a mouse in grass, spine gilt-lettered, all edges gilt (spine faded to brown, wear to joints). Provenance: Doris Louise Benz (morocco bookplate).
