THE JAMES GOODWIN AMERICAN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT INLAID AND BURL-ASH VENEERED OAK PAIR OF BEDSTEADS
ATTRIBUTED TO HERTER BROTHERS (W. 1864-1906), NEW YORK, CIRCA 1874
This pair of bedsteads is characteristic of the Herter Brothers firm’s production of exceptional furniture in its restrained form with charming and intricate decoration. The three-quarter beds and their clean lines express a sensibility for English-design reform while also combining features of the Aesthetic movement, such as the repeated stylized sunflower motif complemented by sprigs of pointed leaves and berries. The sunflower is again repeated in the incised carving seen on the bedposts.
