ONE AND A HALF JOINED PANELS OF ITALIAN STENCILED VELVET
EARLY 20TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY BY MARIA MONACI GALLENGA
Maria Monaci Gallenga (1880-1944) was an intellectual, artist and fashion designer who drew on history for inspiration. Gallenga designed her own textiles to achieve her ideal effect and developed her own innovative printing technique to impart her fluid and harmonious designs onto the fabric. Together with her husband, University of Rome Professor Peter Gallenga, she developed a metallic pigment from a mixture of brass, copper and zinc that could then be block printed or brushed onto a fabric of her choice. Most often the Mediterranean native opted to work with bisso, a fine, lightweight linen; but she was also known to utilize this technique onto more sumptuous fabrics such as velvet, as seen in the present lot.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note antique textiles exhibit wear, losses, soiling and tears from normal use and repurposing. Some elements are re-pieced together with complimentary or contemporaneous textiles to mend.
Overall with some very minor rubbing, cracking and wear to the stenciled coloring as expected with age. Each panel with areas of later sewn repairs to keep the panels joined. The reverse with some scattered staining, including one large water spot approx. 12 in. wide to one panel. Presents well overall.
