Lot Essay

The William de Morgan design source for these dolphins was given to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1917 by Evelyn de Morgan (accession no. E.1553-1917). The sheet at the V&A shows 'pricking' from the process of transferring the design to a ceramic body. A ruby lustre-decorated charger in this pattern is illustrated in M. Greenwood and R. Dennis, The Designs of William de Morgan, Ilminster, 1989, p. 217, pl. 107.
