Lot Essay

The model for the present lot is derived from a group of silver shell-form spice or sugar boxes produced in the late 1500's to the early 1600's. All of the extant examples are marked with maker's mark TI, probably for Thomas Jempson, of which only about two-dozen are recorded. Examples of these English models have sold from The David Little Collection of Early English Silver, Christie's, London, 3 December 2019, lot 122, as well as at Christie's, New York, 19 October 2010, lot 175.
