The inspiration for this tea service likely comes from 18th century French examples, such as a hot milk pot from circa 1746-1749 by Mathieu Bouvier in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Acc. No. 48.187.278). The nightcap tassel-form cover and thumbpiece would have been appropriate for vessels of this form as hot milk was often consumed before bed to encourage sleep and alongside coffee at breakfast.
