Tsarevich Alexei was a historical drama based on the novel Peter and Alexei by Russian Symbolist author Dmitry Merezhkovsky (1865-1941). Benois designed the costumes and décor for the production which was staged in Petrograd at the Bolshoi Drama Theater in 1920.

Peter the Great signed in Cyrillic '…sandr Benua' (lower left) and inscribed with title in Russian 'Tsarevich Aleksei/Petr' (upper right) 127⁄8 x 73⁄4 in. (32.7 x 20.2 cm.)
Condition report: The sheet is hinged at the upper left and right corners. The left, lower and right edges are lined with Japanese paper. All four edges are slightly worn with minor associated losses. There is some minor fraying to the sheet at the lower right edge. The sheet has cockled slightly. There is a minor tear at the upper right edge (approx. ½ in.). There are scattered surface stains overall. The sheet has slightly discolored. The pigments have faded slightly.
Catherine I signed in Cyrillic 'Aleksandr Benua' (lower right) and inscribed with title in Russian 'Tsarevich Aleksei/Ekaterina' (upper right) 123⁄8 x 9 in. (31.5 x 22.8 cm.)
Condition report: The sheet is hinged at the upper left and right corners. The left edge is slightly uneven and irregular. There is staining to the extreme edges, most noticeably along the right edge, to the right of the figure’s shoulder, and a few scattered stains overall. The sheet has slightly discolored. The pigments have faded slightly.
