Lot Essay

Benois worked on several productions of Petrouchka, including one at the Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen in 1957. Alexandre and his son Nicola collaborated on the 1931 production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s (1844-1908) opera Sadko at the Teatro Reale dell'Opera in Rome. Alexandre Benois also designed the costumes and décor for the ballet The Nutcracker, with choreography by Margharita Frohman (1890-1970) to music by Piotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1892), which was performed at La Scala, Milan in 1938.
