Lot Essay

The bed and suite of chairs and stools are upholstered in Genoa velvet and were made by Thomas Roberts from 1686-8 for King James II. The bed bears the Royal Cypher in the carved decoration. It was taken by the 6th Earl of Dorset in 1688 as a prerequisite for office as Lord Chamberlain to King William III. The fire screen dates from circa 1690 and contains a sliding panel. The ebony and silver mounted table, stands and mirror date from the same period.
The room is named after Niccolo Molino who was Venetian Ambassador to the Court of James I and is said to have stayed at Knole.
