The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note antique textiles exhibit wear, losses, soiling and tears from normal use and repurposing. Some elements are re-pieced together with complimentary or contemporaneous textiles to mend.
The D-shaped coverlet composed of joined panels, well matched. The brocade with rubbing and fraying to the silk threads, particularly to the silver metallic threads, revealing the base silk. There's scattered areas of soiling and minor discoloration; larger water mark to the long edge and a few smaller scattered in the central field; there are consequential small tears and shattering to the silk as expected. The reverse with an applied Velcro at the top edge from prior mounting; the taffeta also displaying the same water marks; small patch repairs and areas of concentrated shattering to the silk; soiling throughout. The braided trim with some small separations within the lace with fraying, loose threads and losses to the metallic; a few small areas where the trim is separating from the silk. With affixed label from Au Bon Marché, Paris.
Christie’s strongly suggests viewing this lot in person. You may wish to contact a professional textile conservator with any additional questions as we are unable to provide in-depth condition analysis.
