Lot Essay

The sleek and timeless design of these étagères was commissioned around 1954 by the acclaimed designer Billy Baldwin for the legendary Broadway composer, Cole Porter. Baldwin's design of the lyricist's library at the Waldorf Towers was dramatic, featuring faux-tortoiseshell walls and several of these highly-polished and richly-colored étagères that stretched from floor to ceiling. In a 1983 tribute to Baldwin, The New York Times noted that this room was later considered the designer's favorite interior and his love for the shelving design was such that he used it in his own home and later in other clients' homes.
