Lot Essay

Frances Adler Elkins was an important figure and leading female interior designer of the early 20th century. The design for this carpet originated from Elkins' interior design of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Winslow's home in Pebble Beach, California. The chocolate brown rugs decorated with palm leaves and foliage were designed by Elkins herself and placed in the two living rooms of the home, tying together English furniture, Giacometti-like alabaster lamps, and Peruvian linen window curtains.
