The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note antique textiles exhibit wear, losses, soiling and tears from normal use and repurposing. Some elements are re-pieced together with complimentary or contemporaneous textiles to mend.
As noted, the silk is heavily pieced, with several patch repairs and replacements to create the coverlet. There is separation to some of these seams with consequential fraying to the silk. Areas of wear and rubbing to the cream silk. Scattered areas of soiling to the silk. The ribbon edge with fraying, some areas quite visible and worn. The Indian chintz with soiling to the extreme edges and seams as to be expected. With a few small holes and minor tears.
Christie’s strongly suggests viewing this lot in person. You may wish to contact a professional textile conservator with any additional questions as we are unable to provide in-depth condition analysis.
