Lot Essay

Julius Rappoport (1851 - 1917) was born Isaac Ambramovich Rappoport to a Jewish community in Kovno, Lithuania. He began his career in 1880 as an apprentice under the silversmith Scheff in Berlin, Germany, before becoming a master and moving to St. Petersburg to serve as head silversmith for Faberge. Until his retirement in the early 1890's, Rappoport's output was quite varied, from dinner services to frames such as the one offered here, but was especially known for his beautifully modeled silver animal figures. Though little else is known about Rappoport's life, today his works are highly sought after and are considered some of the finest pieces of silver produced by the Faberge workshop.
