The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note antique textiles exhibit wear, losses, soiling and tears from normal use and repurposing. Some elements are re-pieced together with complimentary or contemporaneous textiles to mend.
The first:
Three joined panels, with a few small tears (11⁄2 in. approx., the longest) and scattered small holes. There are several water marks scattered and an area of white paint affixed. Additional small areas of soiling and ink stains. There is rubbing to the brocade, most apparent to the green and blush silk threads. The lining with typical wear.
The second:
Four joined panels with one edge panel lacking a square section -- possibly removed for another purpose. There are repairs to the pieced seams. Rubbing to the silk brocade. Scattered areas of soiling an discoloration. The gold braided trim with minot fraying. The cotton lining is unfinished and the edges and with light soiling and wear. The areas where a portion off silk removed with separation to the seams, and lose trim.
Christie’s strongly suggests viewing this lot in person. You may wish to contact a professional textile conservator with any additional questions as we are unable to provide in-depth condition analysis.
