The present lot was gifted to Hon. William Fullerton Elphinstone (1740-1834) upon his retirement from the East India Company in 1826. Elphinstone joined the Company at the age of 17 and spent nearly 70 years rising through the ranks to join the Court of Directors in the 1780’s and being elected as the court’s Chairman three times over. He was the father of Major General William Elphinstone, commander of the ill-fated Afghan expedition of 1841, and uncle of Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay and an Indian historian.
