Lot Essay

J. M. (Jacques Mereno) Pontremoli (1888-1952) of Spring Street, London produced a range of needlework carpets in historical styles during the first half of the twentieth century. Most of his output consisted of smaller carpets, most with overall floral design, and it is unusual to find an example in a larger format such as this. A comparable large carpet of Neoclassical design executed in a combination of gros and petit-point and with silk highlights by Pontremoli was sold Christie’s, London, 14 June 2001, lot 202.
