The present second course dishes, part of a larger service, were likely commissioned by James Hamilton (1694-1758), on the occasion of his marriage to Lady Harriet Bentinck (1705-1792) on 15 October 1728. After serving as M.P. for Dundalk 1715-1719, Hamilton was created Baron Clanboye and Viscount of the City of Limerick. As these titles were in the Irish Peerage, Hamilton was able to go on to serve as M.P. for Wendover 1735-1741, Tavistock 1742-1747, and Morpeth 1747-1754. In 1756, Hamilton was also created Earl of Clanbrassil, a title he passed down to his only son James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil (1730-1798).
