Lot Essay

The scene shows four kneeling satyrs, each shouldering a maenad. In the field are vines and on the shoulder are palmettes. This lekythos was collected by Franz Graf von Erbach zu Erbach (1754-1823), a German nobleman and art collector who travelled extensively throughout Europe during the era of the Grand Tour. Parts of his extensive collection of ancient art are still housed at Schloss Erbach outside of Frankfurt.
