Poseidon, holding his trident and a fish, moves to the right, chasing a woman who looks back, holding a kalathos in her right hand. In personal correspondence with Hanita, Dietrich von Bothmer, curator of the Department of Greek and Roman Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, suggested the woman was either Aithra (mother of Theseus) or Amymone (daughter of Danaus), though he noted Amymone typically holds a hydria. For a discussion of pursuit scenes with Poseidon, see pp. 352-363 in E.D. Reeder, ed., Pandora: Women in Classical Greece.
