Lot Essay

The CA Painter (for “Cumae A”) was one of the chief artists working in the Campanian style in Cumae rather than its primary hub in Capua. A favorite subject was the Italic warrior, as seen in this example, here wearing a wide-belted tunic, graves and a plumed helmet. While it is tempting to see this hydria and lot 534 as a pair, the discrepancy in sizes and – as Mayo, op. cit., observes – the standard repertoire of the CA Painter prevents this conclusion.
