Lot Essay

Prince Ramesses-Mentuherkhekeshef, identified by the inscription on this shabti, was a son of Ramesses IX of the late 20th Dynasty. In 1817, Giovanni Belzoni discovered the princes' tomb in the Valley of the Kings (KV19), which had been reused in ancient times for other later burials. However the walls retained finely painted scenes of the prince worshiping various deities. For two shabti fragments excavated from the tomb, see pl. 40e in C.N. Reeves, “Excavations in the Valley of the Kings, 1905/6: A Photographic Record,” Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts, Abteilung Kairo 40, 1984. For a discussion of the tomb, see pp. 170-171 in Reeves and R. Wilkinson, The Complete Valley of the Kings.
