Lot Essay

This panel is from the back of a large anthropoid coffin and adorned with the goddess Nut standing with her bent arm outstretched. She wears a long garment ornamented in zigzag pattern and her identifying -jar atop her head that forms a part of her name. Similar examples are known from Abusir el-Meleq and Gamhud, with the zigzag pattern especially frequent at the latter site. The curved lines of Nut’s nose, mouth, and chin, as well as the detailing of her ear are characteristic of the period, as are the knot and fringe of the top of her dress.
