Lot Essay

Icarius reliefs depict Dionysos, patron of the theater, visiting Icarius, the father of Attic tragedy, or another poet. In her discussion of the type, M. Bieber (pp. 153-154, The Sculpture of the Hellenistic Age) remarks that the reliefs are noteworthy for their inclusion of a foreground (as seen here, with a youth reclining and a table of food) set against a continuous pictorial background.
