Lot Essay

The ornate form of the hoop, which is largely wrought from one piece of gold, not cast, with the disc-like bezel separately applied, is typical of the later Roman period. The bezel is incised with a military eagle, an attribute of Jupiter and as such representing military victory and invoking protection from the god.
