Lot Essay

The personified goddess of victory, Victoria, or her Greek equivalent, Nike, alights on a small sphere above a stone orb. Her left leg is advanced and she carries a large wreath above her head. It has been suggested that the ensemble was perhaps originally held in the hand of a large statue of an emperor. Cf. a denarius struck during the reign of Caracalla depicting the emperor holding Victory on a globe in his extended right hand, kept at the British Museum (Inv. no. 1930,0812.140).
