The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Overall these commodes are in structurally stable condition. There are inevitable scratches, marks, knocks, dents, abrasions, losses and areas of discolouration to both, consistent with age and use. As catalogued, the top of one has been reveneered and the medallion to the centre is defective, with most of the figures of Venus and Cupid completely lacking. The centre of the top is very bowed due to movement in the carcase timbers. The movement probably caused excessive losses to the original veneers hence the reveneering with a slightly less complex design, although the medallion was retained (although now largely lost). The top drawer of this commode is tight in the recess and there are some small areas of timber to the drawer lining lacking in the front right corner of the bottomboard and in the left side panel. Some losses and replacements to the drawer edge mouldings and some losses, repairs and replacements to the crossbanding of both commodes. Shrinkage splits to the veneers overall. Some repairs and infilling to the dark areas of the stiles. Losses to one corner bracket. As catalogued, the legs of one commode reduced in height by approximately one inch.
