Lot Essay

Oliver Messel designed the set and costumes for the 1936 film of Romeo and Juliet, which was produced in Hollywood by MGM. The film was directed by George Cukor and starred Norma Shearer as Juliet and and Leslie Howard as Romeo. Messel's designs were reproduced in a limited edition of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which was published by B.T. Batsfords Ltd, London, 1936.
