Lot Essay

Serge Lifar was a Ukrainian-born, French ballet dancer, choreographer and was one of the greatest male ballet dancers of the 20th century. In 1929, at the age of twenty-four, Lifar become director of the Paris Opéra Ballet and began the rebirth of ballet in France. Lifar created many successful ballets for the company, including Icare in 1935.
