The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In the case of all the component panels, what appears to be a gesso plaster support has been laid down on later panels.
The supports:
Each of the supports, apart from Saint Sebastian has a vertical crack (horizontal in the case of the predella panel) running the length of the panel.
The Gesso-Plaster:
The gesso layer is slightly unstable where the underlying support has cracked. There is a marker pattern of craquelure across the surfaces. There are some scattered losses.
The Gold:
There have been some losses to the background gold passages, though the main punchwork remains fully appreciable.
The paint:
There has been some discolouration to the paint. The blues, especially those of Saint Sebastian's cloak, would benefit from cleaning.
Overall, the linear modelling of the figures and the detailing of their clothing and attributes remains.
The overall altar composition:
Reconstructed into the present format with additional supporting timbers varying in date, including some modern timbers. The underside supported by two pine tables. The giltwood carvings with extensive losses to the carving and gilding, as well as some regluing and restorations.
In order to be constructed we would recommend the involvement of a professional conservator.
The embroidery:
There are extensive losses to the threads, overall discolouration and staining. Original embroidery guide lines visible where the silk thread is now lacking. The remains of threads and their vivid colours are evident to the reverse. There is a vertical tear approx 5in to the lower right corner.
