Dishes combining underglaze blue and copper-red decoration with such painterly composition and refined brushwork are exceptionally rare. Produced during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722), this piece exemplifies the technical and artistic sophistication achieved in porcelain manufacture of the period. The vivid contrast and subtle modulation of the blue and red tones attest to the potter’s consummate mastery of the demanding firing process required to realize both colors successfully. For a closely related example, see a Kangxi blue and white and copper-red dish from the Butler Family Collection, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 November 2022, lot 2964.
