Lot Essay

The present lotus leaf-form straw cup represents a refined synthesis of naturalistic design, symbolic meaning, and literati aesthetics in late Ming porcelain. The cup’s curled lotus leaf shape evokes the withering “autumn lotus,” while the small crab attached to the straw embodies auspicious puns on jia and jie (“success” or “release”), alluding to examination honors and good fortune.Used in elegant gatherings, the straw-cup invited poetic drinking rituals, allowing guests to “sip from the lotus” in a gesture of cultured play.
