The decoration of this dish draws on the classical theme of the Eight Horses (Ba Jun), derived from the legend of King Mu of the Zhou dynasty, who is said to have ridden eight celestial steeds on his journeys across the heavens. During the Kangxi period, this motif took on dual connotations: it symbolized both the auspicious promise of success and the Confucian ideal of a virtuous ruler attracting worthy and talented officials to his service.
