A note in the Palmer family ledger record this jug as the first piece Reginald Howard Reed (R.H.R.) Palmer added to his collection. This jug is recorded as no. 4 in the family ledger, pieces recorded as no. 1 to no. 3 were actually wedding presents. The fine execution of the painted enamels exemplifies Guangdong enameled porcelain (Guangcai) from its peak during the Qianlong era (1735–1796). Although scholars generally trace the origin of Guangcai to the late Kangxi period, most surviving examples date from the Yongzheng reign onward. Production expanded dramatically in the 18th century, with estimates suggesting several million to ten million pieces were exported to Europe annually at its height. This thriving export industry is vividly documented in the 1769 account of American traveler William Hickey, who described numerous workshops along the Pearl River in Guangzhou, where hundreds of artisans, including children, painted designs specifically for the Western market.
