Lot Essay

The present teapot exemplifies a fascinating synthesis of cultures: a Chinese ewer embellished with European figural decoration. This cross-cultural aesthetic raises the question of whether such works were produced for export or for domestic appreciation of Western imagery. While the imperial workshops in Beijing created fine painted enamels with European subjects for the court, the large manufactories in Guangdong primarily focused on the export market such as our present piece.
