Lot Essay

Chairs of this type are known as meiguiyi in the north but in the south they are known as wenyi or scholar's chair. The form is characterised by its low regular back and it is thought that when placed in the scholar's studio, it would fit neatly under the window without obstructing the view outside. A pair of huanghuali meiguiyi from the 17th-18th century sold at Christie's Hong Kong,1 June 2016, lot 3249; a set of four 18th-19th century huanghuali lowback armchairs sold at Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 91.
