Lot Essay

Guangdong-produced painted-enamel on metal (copper) wares during the Yongzheng period primarily catered to three markets: the imperial court, the domestic market, and foreign export. While these categories were distinct, some overlap existed. Scholarship on Guangdong painted-enamel wares has often focused on pieces made as tribute or imperial commissions, the technical exchanges between the court and regional centres, and stylistic parallels with overglaze enamel porcelains. Notably, the so-called ruby-backed dishes, such as the present examples, are characterized by a deep rose-red enamel on the reverse and share patterns and color schemes with certain imperial wares. This similarity has led scholars to suggest that some of the ruby-backed dishes circulating in the Yongzheng and early Qianlong periods may have been produced in Guangdong.
See two closely-related Canton enamel dishes, Yongzheng period, from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Clark and later the Speelman Collection, sold at Sotheby’s London, 1 November 2023, lot 169.
