Lot Essay

Imperial noblewomen wore surcoats called longgua or 'dragon coats' with semi-formal court dress. They were an integral part of court attire and signified the status and rank of the wearer. The roundels of this surcoat depict two different dragons: the upper roundels depict five-clawed dragons with scaly bodies and the lower roundels show kui dragons with scrolling bodies. Surcoats of this type with kui dragons with scrolling bodies were given to Imperial Consorts of the third to fifth rank. The present lot may be compared to a related 19th century blue-ground kesi surcoat sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2012,lot 4027 and to another example sold at Christie's Paris, 23 June 2020, lot 71.
